Puppets are avatared programs intended for human interaction. Typically, the term is applied exclusively to such programs:

• found on the internet
• mode of interaction is speech or gestures
• avatar is recognisably a living entity

Programmers may refer to entirely passive interactive items as Puppets, too, though those keen on unambiguous communication will avoid this.

Technological distinction can be made between autonomous and sim-bound Puppets.
